Date Night Fort Knox for Military Families

Fort Knox is a small installation in Kentucky. It’s home to the Army’s Human Resources Command, Cadet Command, and the United States Bullion Depository (if y’all remember the Austin Powers movie). While it may be small, the installation is conveniently located between multiple cities. It’s approximately 45 minutes from Louisville, just over two hours from Cincinnati, and approximately two and a half hours from Nashville, as well as Indianapolis.

With such a central location, date nights and weekends near Fort Knox are close by and full of adventure. Here are some ideas for you and your service member. Whether they’re up for a quick bite to eat or an overnighter in a nearby city, we’ve got the perfect suggestion for a Date Night Fort Knox.
The adventurous date night
If you are an active couple, one of the most adventure-packed evenings you can have is in Louisville. Louisville is home to Mega Caverns, an underground cave that has been turned into a bike park, underground zip line, and more. The location has discounts for students, military, and veterans. Make sure you book in advance, as tickets book out fast. Furthermore, Louisville houses an axe-throwing facility, called Flying Axes. Couples can play against each other by aiming axes at targets for precision points. It’s a great place to add a little competition into your date night.
Unique date nights
The local Fort Knox area has a lot to offer. Enjoy a sunset hike in the summer at Saunders’ Springs, right off the Fort Knox gate. This location has a waterfall and various hiking trails that are perfect for a quick walk. On Thursday nights during the summer and fall months, the Brown Pusey House Museum in Elizabethtown hosts Tavern in the Garden, an outdoor music event in the museum’s backyard. The event is free, open to the public, and has food and alcohol available for purchase.
For those looking for a different kind of “movie”, the University of Louisville has a planetarium on campus. The facility hosts weekend night laser shows in an IMAX-like theater, as well as educational programs. Sing along to popular songs, all set to the music of a laser light show during later evening programming. Also, you can tour their one-room museum, which features various exhibits, some local to Kentucky.
Night on the town
Night out? Louisville is full of local bars and restaurants that offer the best nightlife out there. 4th Street Live is the place to go on a Saturday night if you want to ride a mechanical bull at PBR, sing until your lungs give out at Howl at the Moon, or bring friends and play indoor games all night, such as cornhole, billiards, and bocce ball at Tavern on Fourth. Want to be where the locals are? Check out Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue, where popular restaurants and bars include Baxter’s, HopCat, and O’Shea’s Irish Pub.
The overnight date
Ready to get away for the night? If you’d like to stay close to Fort Knox, you can visit the historic Brown Hotel and try the famous Louisville Hot Brown, an open-faced sandwich invented at the hotel. If you’re up for a night of southern dancing, enjoy downtown Nashville, Tennessee, only a couple hours away. Nashville has the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, which has an incredible indoor botanical garden, river, and offers canoe rides. Across the street is the Grand Ole Opry, as well as a mall with an Aquarium Restaurant that offers a unique underwater experience.
Quaint day trip dates
Approximately two hours from Fort Knox and just an hour from Louisville is Nashville, Indiana. Not to be confused with Nashville, Tennessee, this small town is one of the quaintest in the region. The town is brimming with local boutiques, restaurants, and is located on the way to Indianapolis for a quick side-trip.
The region is also well known for cabins and quaint camping adventures. Closer to Fort Knox is the small town of Glendale, Kentucky home of the famous Whistle Stop restaurant and numerous antiquing stores. Also, near Fort Knox is Bardstown, Kentucky, a quaint small town filled with boutique shopping, a well-known Bourbon Festival, and home-grown southern restaurants. The town has a few military museums worth a visit as well!

Whether you’re passing through Fort Knox or stationed here for a while, this small installation is in perfect proximity to unique and fun things to do. I have left Fort Knox for career opportunities in the past, but always find my way back here. It’s truly caught my heart and the installation is home.
