North Carolina is a state that has it all; beach, mountains, city, country, and the Piedmont.  There is something for everyone, from one end of the state to the other.  If you are stationed at Fort Liberty (formerly known as Fort Bragg), most of the state's best offerings are just a day trip away.

Things to do near Fort Liberty, North Carolina

Whether you just received orders to Fort Liberty or PCSed months ago, it's never too early or too late to start sightseeing. There are plenty of things to do near Fort Liberty, whether you like wandering through old towns, getting out in nature, or taking in nightlife in a big city.

Towns by the water

If the coast is more your vibe, North Carolina has some of the best oceanside small towns.

New Bern

New Bern is a water town located approximately two hours from Fayetteville. It is filled with historic sites, small businesses, and a walkable landscape.  This is also the home to renowned author Nicholas Sparks.

The town has a tour featuring New Bern highlights as well as landmarks made famous by some of Nicholas Sparks’s most-read novels turned into films.

Beaufort

Beaufort is a water town located just two and a half hours from Fort Liberty. This town is filled with shops, restaurants, and most importantly the ferry that takes you for tours or drop-offs to Shackleford Banks Island where the wild horses roam, Sand Dollar Island, and much more.

Wilmington

In just under two hours, you can be in the fascinating city of Wilmington, which is close to Wrightsville beach. Wilmington is not only a college town, but also home to many TV and Film production teams from around the world. Due to film production, this town has grown exponentially. 

There are also many different restaurants to choose from, a fabulous downtown area, and a quick commute to the beach.

Are cities more your scene? North Carolina has several interesting and fun downtown areas to explore!

Raleigh

In under an hour, you can have the perks of big city life at your fingertips in Raleigh. Whether you desire shopping at Crabtree Valley Mall or Triangle Town Center, or the nightlife in downtown Raleigh, you are sure to find it here. 

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is a special treat for the entire family. The Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts also hosts many events and entertainment acts throughout the year. For outdoor concert venues, try The Red Hat Amphitheater, Koka Booth Amphitheatre, and Walnut Creek Amphitheatre.

A couple walkable areas that have shopping, restaurants, and activities are North Hills and Lafayette Village.

Greensboro

In less than two hours, you can visit the North Carolina Zoo, which is nestled close to Greensboro, another large metropolitan area.

Charlotte

Charlotte is a three-hour drive from Fort Liberty. This city, referred to as the “Queen City,” is home to almost all of North Carolina’s pro sports teams.  Not only do you get the perks of city life here, but you can also spectate NFL, NASCAR, or NBA games.

Mountains

If nature is more your speed, you've got lots of choices within easy driving distance of Fort Liberty.

Asheville

While Asheville is the furthest to drive in a day, you will not be disappointed. This city is a four-hour drive from Fort Liberty, but offers a unique artsy vibe. Downtown has an array of restaurants, shops, and street entertainment. The Biltmore House is a must-see, and the Blue Ridge Parkway will allow you the best view of mountain scenery.

Boone

Boone is home to Appalachian State University, skiing in the winter, and an array of locally owned businesses and restaurants. It takes three and a half hours to arrive in this beautiful mountain town, but it's worth the drive.
