Fun Day Trips from Lackland AFB

Mild year-round temperatures make it relatively easy to spend time outside when stationed in this part of the Lone Star State. Within a few hours drive, you can enjoy the music scene in Austin or put your toes in the sand on the Gulf Coast.

Here are our suggestions for some fun and interesting Lackland day trips.

Fredricksburg

Just a little over an hour north of Lackland AFB is the quaint city of Fredericksburg. In addition to its German heritage and the National Museum of the Pacific War, Fredericksburg has plenty of birding, fishing, bicycling and rock climbing opportunities.  The area also has over 40 wineries in the Hill Country along the Highway 290 Wine Road outside of Fredericksburg. It is second only to the Sonoma wine region in California as the most visited wine area in the country. New Braunfels

About 50 minutes north-east of Lackland AFB on I-35, New Braunfels offers two great outdoor experiences: the Comal and Guadalupe rivers. Swimming, tubing, and kayaking are popular activities. Numerous hiking and biking trails, campgrounds, fishing holes and parks make this a well-liked destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Paradise Canyon Recreational Park

A half-hour north-west of Lackland AFB  is more than 12,000 acres at the Government Canyon State Natural Area to include Paradise Canyon Recreational Park. Activities include camping, hiking, fishing, and tubing and camping. Austin

Just an hour and a half up I-35 is the Texas State Capitol where artistic diversity does not take a backseat to history. Enjoy a meal and the music scene at one of the many outdoor cafes. Friedrich Wilderness Park

An entire day of hiking awaits you at Friedrich Wilderness Park. This hiker’s paradise offers approximately 10 miles of hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty. It is home for rare birds, terrestrial orchids, steep hills and deep canyons. It is internationally known for bird watching. Perched on the edge if the Balcones Escarpment, Friedrich is a nesting site for two federally listed endangered species of birds: the Black-capped Vireo and the Golden-cheeked Warbler. The Beach

Texas is home to some beautiful beaches! Corpus Christi, on the Gulf of Mexico, features boating, fishing and lots of sand! It is approximately 150 miles or a two hour ride from Lackland AFB. Enchanted Rock

The pink granite exfoliation dome called Enchanted Rock rises 425 foot above ground and covers 640 acres. Bring a kite and get ready for some great camping, picnicking and seven miles of hiking trails.
